Jeremiah 8:4-7, 18-9:6, Romans 5:1-11, John 8:12-20
Q. 49. Which is the Second Commandment?
A. The Second Commandment is, “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.”
Q. 50. What is required in the Second Commandment?
A. The Second Commandment requireth the receiving, observing, and keeping pure and entire all such religious worship and ordinances as God hath appointed in his Word.
Prayer: Give ear to my words, O Lord; give heed to my sighing. Listen to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you I pray. Let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, so that those who love your name may exult in you. For you bless the righteous, O Lord; you cover them with favor as with a shield. (Psalm 5:1-2, 11-12)
Reflection: Our worship should be focused on God not on the things of this earth. We spend much time worried about the trappings of power, prestige and status even within our own church. We should, instead be humble before God and worship Him and Him alone.
